The new Hawthorn building at Penn State Altoona consists of approximately 58,000 square feet. Of that total, 10,000 square feet of the building was dedicated to a new computer center. The construction plans included three computer classrooms, two of which would be adjoining for lecture and computer labs.

Furnish 5 floors of a 6 story building with a wide variety of furniture and finishes: private offices, student workstations, classroom tables with flush mounted power, freestanding storage units, and conference tables. The volume of furniture required deliveries being coordinated into separate schedules so business could continue being conducted in the building during installation.

Create separate departments within a large space with various levels of privacy, without any additional construction of walls. Maximum storage must be integrated into all workstations without limiting kneespace, including overhead storage as well as separate storage areas. Shipping and installation must coordinate with an ever-changing and tight construction schedule. On-site installation to be fully supported by Design Options personnel.

Creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing work environment using ergonomic edge treatments and curvilinear workstation layouts was a primary concern. There was also a need to incorporate as much filing space as possible without specifying freestanding lateral files.
